New Autumn Images

Hello everyone.

Autumn has to be one of my favourite seasons of the year to get out and photograph! The days are shorter (so more sleep for me), temperatures are cooling off, bugs have disappeared for the most part, and nature is putting on a spectacular show. This can also be one of the most unpredictable seasons of the year as you are never quite sure how long it is going to last. Here on the prairies, if you are blessed with some warmer autumn temperatures it usually brings with it wind, and that wind can strip all the beauty off the trees fairly quickly.

The season started pretty early for us this year - about seven to ten days early with cold temperatures that kickstarted the change in colour. Fortunately the leaves held on (even through some crazy windy days) and autumn stuck around for quite some time - well into the end of October which isn't normal at all! This allowed for an unexpected extension of fall shooting and I tried to take advantage of it as much as possible.

Here are some of my favourites from the last two months - hope you enjoy.

I'm Having a Show

“All That I Survey . . . “

Who in their right mind gets up at 3:30 in the morning, drives an hour and a half powered by cheap coffee to some lonely, deserted shoreline or wind-swept prairie parkland, just to see the sun come up?! Probably the same people you’ll find standing in an open field of a long-abandoned farmhouse in the middle of January, well after midnight, in hopes of seeing the aurora borealis appear overhead. Who are these people? Why, they are landscape photographers, of course!

Daniel Menheer and Chris Ford are two such photographers. They live to be the first to see the sun rise up from the blackness of night. They seek out subtle shapes and nuances of nature’s designs and patterns. Their goal is to capture those scenes that others might miss or not see at all, and bring back images that make us marvel at the beautiful simplicity that nature puts on display for us to see each and every day. Whether fleeting images that are frozen in hundredths of a second, or beautifully extended exposures of minutes that beckon us into the mists of time itself, these are the images that stop us in our tracks and call us to drink in all the details that nature has exposed for us to savour.

This display shares but a few of these carefully chosen photographs that both Daniel and Chris have had a passion to discover and capture. They are gift-wrapped in the enthusiasm and wonder of all that nature has to offer, and each image has its own unique story surrounding it. You the viewer are invited to discover each of these stories, and revel in each image as it calls out to you.

We hope to see you all there.

Website Update!

Hello all.

Just a quick note to let you know that I've finally updated my website.  FINALLY!  It's been a long time in coming, but I finally have new images and galleries for you to have a look at.  I hope you enjoy the new images from the past year!

Wanasing Beach Sunrise

Hello all!  Today I wanted to share with you something new that I've been trying out over the past nine months or so.  My good friend Cory introduced me to time lapse photography about a year ago and it wasn't long before I was dappling with it myself!  It's always a bit of a dilema for me when I go out to shoot now - do I concentrate on my still photography, or do I try some time lapse?

The thing with time lapse is it takes your camera away for at least an hour or two - maybe even longer if you are shooting the night sky!  Usually something amazing is happening as well, so the dilema is real when it comes to stills or time lapse!  It takes about 500 to 800 images to put together a small video (usually between 15 and 30 seconds worth!), so you can see that it is time consuming, and it will take a bit of time to build up a nice catalogue of video.

Eventually we want to add a time lapse dolly into the mix in order to introduce camera movements while the time lapse is going on.  Hopefully sometime early next year we will have that in our hands - it should be a lot of fun!

Anyway, here is a small sampling of a sunrise I shot while out at the lake with my family this past September.  There wasn't a lot of colour, but the clouds were intense, and the results are fantastic!  I hope you enjoy!

Abstract in Motion

I've been looking for different ways to spice up my nature photography, and one way to do so is to look at things a little more abstractly.  I follow a few photographers who use purposeful motion in their images, so I decided to give it a try for myself.  After about seven hundred images, and lots of trial and error, I think I've figured out the "equation" to give some fabulous results.  Below are some of my favourites from over the past year - I hope you enjoy!
