Student Show!

Hello everyone.

I know it's been a while since my last post. Things have been busier than ever for me over the fall season and things are now starting to wind down. I had the privilege of teaching the Autumn Colours class at PrairieView School of Photography again this year. The group of students was awesome and it was a blast showing them around the province as we photographed the autumn change. To cap off this class there is a show to show off the wonderful images the students were able to capture. So, if you are looking for something to do this Sunday (November 23rd), why not come out to the school from 1:00-4:00 and take in some of the beautiful artwork on display. It would be great to see you there - should be a fun afternoon!

New Show!

Hey there everyone!

It's been a while since I've posted here… intentions are always good, but it seems time is never on my side. My goal for the fall season is to post more regularly, so we'll see how that goes…

Though time is not on my side for posting here, it is encouraging that I've had some time to go and photograph. I'm excited to announce that I have a new show coming up this fall. Caroline Wintoniw and I are showcasing images from travels both close to home and abroad and it's going to be awesome! It's all new work… only a handful of people have seen anything from this collection. It's hanging for most of the month of September, and the opening is on Friday, September 5th. It would be great if you could find the time to come and check it out!

I'm Having a Show...Again!

Hello all.

I just wanted to put a plug in for my new show coming up in September. My friend Chris Ford and I are back at it, this time at the Millennium Library in the Blankstein Gallery. The show will be up from September 3rd until the 30th, with an open house on Thursday, September 5th from 6:30-9:00.

Manitoba is home to a diverse and beautiful range of terrain that encompasses everything from vast prairie skies to rugged Canadian Shield; sandy beaches to lush boreal forests.

Brought together through a common interest in landscape photography,

Daniel Menheer and Chris Ford have been gathering images throughout our province for over two years.

Their exhibit, entitled “Manitoba Wild“, captures just a hint of the beauty to be experienced here in Manitoba.

Spring Tease

I spent an afternoon at my mother-in-law's place the other day and had some fun getting in close with all the flowers that are blooming around her house. She really does seem to have a green thumb when it comes to plants, and boy did it heighten my desire for spring to come.

Aviation Museum

I had a chance to take some of my Photo 2 students to the Aviation Museum in town the other day and we had a great time photographing the old planes in the hanger. Towards the end I had a chance to pull out my own camera to see what I could come up with. I took inspiration from the assignment that I had given the students, as well as from a good friend and great photographer, Jonah O'Neil. For the most part I shoot with a pretty wide angle lens when I come here, so I was excited to try something new. My goal was to centre around selective focus, some punchy colour and a little more of an abstract look. So, I donned my 100mm macro lens, and this is what I came up with. Let me know what you think.

Thank You

Thank You!

Well, the weekend is over and weʼre back into our regular routines. We just want to extend a BIG thank you to all our friends and family who came out to our first Photo Exhibit and sale this past Friday and Saturday evening!

Your support and encouragement meant a lot to us and we appreciated all your comments and questions regarding our selection of images. We apologize if we were not able to spend as much time with everyone as we would have liked; the crowds were great!

A special thanks to the staff at PrairieView School of Photography for allowing us to hold our show in their facilities. It seemed like the right place, since we both graduated from the Diploma Course at PV in the past few years. It was like an “old home week” party, only with all our friends and family in attendance.

We have had a number of people ask us about printing some of the images that were shown on the slide show during the evening. Some of you patiently sat through the whole show twice, waiting for your favourite image to re-appear. In case you didnʼt get a chance to see your favourite for the second time, we have included a link to a Picasa album which shows all the images that were displayed at the show.

When you click the link it will direct you to the Picasa Album showing the thumbnails of all the images at the show. When you select one of the images you will find "Photo Information" at the right hand side of the screen. There is a small blue arrow beside this that will drop down information about the photo, including the file name (eg. ATIS-1.jpeg). Please use this name to order any image that you are interested in purchasing.

I'm Having a Show

“All That I Survey . . . “

Who in their right mind gets up at 3:30 in the morning, drives an hour and a half powered by cheap coffee to some lonely, deserted shoreline or wind-swept prairie parkland, just to see the sun come up?! Probably the same people you’ll find standing in an open field of a long-abandoned farmhouse in the middle of January, well after midnight, in hopes of seeing the aurora borealis appear overhead. Who are these people? Why, they are landscape photographers, of course!

Daniel Menheer and Chris Ford are two such photographers. They live to be the first to see the sun rise up from the blackness of night. They seek out subtle shapes and nuances of nature’s designs and patterns. Their goal is to capture those scenes that others might miss or not see at all, and bring back images that make us marvel at the beautiful simplicity that nature puts on display for us to see each and every day. Whether fleeting images that are frozen in hundredths of a second, or beautifully extended exposures of minutes that beckon us into the mists of time itself, these are the images that stop us in our tracks and call us to drink in all the details that nature has exposed for us to savour.

This display shares but a few of these carefully chosen photographs that both Daniel and Chris have had a passion to discover and capture. They are gift-wrapped in the enthusiasm and wonder of all that nature has to offer, and each image has its own unique story surrounding it. You the viewer are invited to discover each of these stories, and revel in each image as it calls out to you.
